MIDI Gameboy

hi all,

this is my latest gameboy, it is a clearboy with the text removed and painted white on the inside.

it has a pocket gameboy screen, which is backlit with a white nonfinite backlight and bi inverted using bibbin/nitro’s hex inverting idea

the gamboy has a built in arduino mini, and a midi socket on the side, there is also a mini usb socket at the bottom for updating the firmware.

the code on the arduino (orignally by Trash80) has been modded slightly to change the light patterns and also add sound for when the arduino boots up and changes mode.

in the middle there is a heart made of LEDs this shows the modes and flashes to show the BPM

    Hey Nex
I was just wondering how would i go about putting a mini usb into my Gameboy?
Im thinking of connecting a Nes control to it but do not want the wire to be constantly attached to it so thought about possibly having the control and Gamboy both have a usb port?

    Any ideas

    Cheers

    Dan

do you wanna drop me an email? Ralph (dot) nex (at) gmail (dot) com, it would be easier to work with a different kind of port than a miniUSB as they don’t have any mounting points, and actually you don’t have enough pins on them anyway. you need 6 pins. unless you want to be super smart and use a serial to parallel converter to convert the original nes data to something the gameboy understands maybe

I dont have one on hand yet, but do you think an Arduino Pro mini would fit flat and on the broad side of a Pocket’s cartidge slot and still close? There seems to be enough room, but like I said, I can’t find out for myself atm. I want to know becuase my Midi jack will fit amazingly on the front where I removed the speaker! And and a midi capable pocket would be awesome!

Well this is embarrassing…that space I asked about is for the game Cartridges. Not to mention the voltage differences. :P

  5. NeX says:

what do you mean voltage differences?

  6. NeX says:

no arduino will fit in the pocket, i midi enabled a gameboy colour for someone and i tried for ages to fit a pro mini inside but there just isn’t room (and the colour has more space) so in the end i built an arduino from scratch and that fitted fine, i also used 3.5mm jacks as the midi sockets and then made a jack to midi socket adapter. i should really upload it to the blog but i am getting lazy!
